Bir akşam vakti bir kadın hava alanında uçağının kalkış saatini bekliyordu. Uçağın kalkmasına daha çok vardı.

One evening, a woman was waiting for her flight at the airport. The plane still had long time to take off.

Kadın bir süre hava alanındaki dükkanları dolaştı. Sonunda kendine bir kitap ve bir paket kurabiye alıp oturacak bir yer aramaya başladı.

For a while, the woman wandered the shops in the airport. At the end, she bought a book and a pack of cookies and started to look for a place to sit .

Aldığı kitap çok sürükleyici bir romandı. Ama, kadın kendini kitaba ne kadar kaptırırsa kaptırsın, oturduğu bankın öbür ucundaki adamın olabildiğince cüretkar bir şekilde aralarında duran paketten kurabiyeleri birer birer aldığını görebiliyordu.

The book she bought was a very page-turner novel. But no matter how much the woman got caught up in the book, she could still see that the man on the other side of the bench where she was sitting, as boldly as possible took cookies one by one from the package that stood among them .

Kadın bir yandan kitabını okuyup, öte yandan ağır ağır kurabiye yiyor; arada bir saatine bakıyordu.

The woman was reading her book, while she was slowly eating the cookies; and was looking at her watch every now and then.

Yanında oturan kurabiye hırsızı da kurabiyeleri birer ikişer almaya devam ediyordu.

The cookie thief sitting next to her continued to take the cookies in ones or twos.

Roman kendisini çok sarsa da, adama karşı içten içe çok öfkeleniyordu.

Although the woman was cought up in the novel , she was very angry with the man inside.

“Kibar biri olmasam, adamın gözüne yumruğu patlatırdım” diye söyleniyordu.

She complained:

“If I wasn’t polite, I’d blow the fist in the man’s eyes”

O sırada kurabiye hırsızı işine devam ediyordu. Kadın her kurabiye aldığında o da bir tane alıyordu. Bir kadın, bir o.

Meanwhile, the cookie thief was doing his job. Every time the woman takes one cookie, he was getting one. One for her, one for him.

En sonunda pakette tek bir kurabiye kaldı. Kadın, “kurabiye hırsızı” adını taktığı adamın şimdi ne yapacağını merak ediyordu.

Finally, only one cookie left in the package. The woman was wondering what the man she called “cookie thief” would do now.

Göz ucuyla adama baktı. Adamın yüzünde bir gülümseme vardı. Adam son kurabiyeyi aldı, ikiye böldü ve yarısını kadına uzattı. Diğer yarısını da ağzına attı.

She shot the man a glance. The man had a smile on his face. He took the last cookie, broke it in two and handed one half to the woman. He dropped the other half into his mouth.

Kadın yarım kurabiyeyi adamın elinden kapar gibi aldığında:

“Aman Allah’ım! Ne kaba bir adam!” diye düşünüyordu.

When she grabs half a cookie from the man’s hand:

“Oh my God! What a vulgar man!” she thought.

O sırada uçağın kalkma vaktinin geldiğini fark etti. Eşyalarını topladı, çıkış kapısına doğru yürüdü. Kurabiye hırsızına ise asla dönüp bakmadı.

At that moment, she realized that it was time for the plane to take off. She gathered her things, walked to the exit door. She never looked back at the cookie thief.

Uçağa bindi, koltuğuna uzandı sonra da bitmek üzere olan kitabına döndü.
Kitabı almak için çantasına uzandığında, kadını bir sürpriz bekliyordu. Aldığı bir paket kurabiye hala çantadaydı.

She got on the plane, lay down on his seat, and then returned to her book, which was about to end. When she reached into her bag to get the book, a surprise awaited her. A packet of cookies she bought was still in the bag.

Bunlar benim kurabiyelerim ise” diye düşündü kadın ” yediklerim onundu.
Özür dilemek için çok geç kalmıştı. KURABİYE hırsızı adam değil kendisiydi

If these are my cookies, the woman thought, the one I ate was “his” . It was too late to apologize. COOKIE thiefwas not the man but herself.
